The Department of Geophysics is Croatia’s (only) institution for geophysical education, offering programs in meteorology, physical oceanography, seismology, and geomagnetism with aeronomy at all university levels. Its scientists and associates conduct high-quality research on both domestic and international fronts, enriching the educational experience for future generations of geophysicists. The department comprises three units: the Andrija Mohorovičić Geophysical Institute, the Seismological Survey, and the Central Geophysical Library.
Andrija Mohorovičić Geophysical Institute
The Institute’s researchers and associates do research, teaching and professional work in areas of meteorology, physical oceanography, seismology, and geomagnetism with aeronomy. They maintain meteorological observatories in Zagreb, Ražanac and Maslenica, the tide-gauge station Bakar, the Geomagnetic Observatory Lonjsko polje, and (semi)temporary seismic networks according to their research interests and needs.
Croatian Seismological Survey
The Croatian Seismological Survey plays a role in monitoring earthquake activity in Croatia. The survey operates the Croatian State Seismograph and Accelerograph Networks, collects seismological data, analyses and locates earthquakes and monitors the seismicity, disseminates official information about significant earthquakes to the public, civil protection authorities and media, and provides expert seismic analyses.
Andrija Mohorovičić
The Department of Geophysics proudly honors the legacy of the esteemed geophysicist and scientist, Andrija Mohorovičić. Renowned worldwide for his groundbreaking contributions to seismology, Mohorovičić’s discovery of the Mohorovičić discontinuity remains pivotal in our understanding of Earth’s interior properties. Popularizing Geophysics
Beside research, the department is active in the field of popularization in science. All popularization activities can be found on Instagram and Facebook page “Geofizika uživo”. Recently the employees of the department helped scientists from Innsbruck University and DHMZ make a video about climate changes and how it impacts the world under the title: “Climate in Europe in 2050.” One of the authors is Dr. Ivan Guttler (DHMZ), invited speaker of 8th PhDSS.
