The 8th PhD Student Symposium program will be announced a few weeks before the symposium. The Symposium will be held at two departments of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb: the Department of Physics (Bijenička cesta 32) on Friday, April 26, and the Department of Chemistry (Horvatovac 102a) on Saturday, April 27.

The program will consist of invited lectures, workshops, oral presentations, poster sections, sponsor sections, and an entertainment section (a STEM quiz – stay tuned for applications).

Invited speakers

This year the Symposium will have 4 invited speakers. The new addition to the Symposium Program is Panel discussion.

  1. Ivan Güttler, PhD: “Climate change: a historical and personal perspective”
  2. Ana-Sunčana Smith, PhD: “The role of theoretical approaches in pushing the boundaries of the current knowledge: the necessity of collaborations and interdisciplinarity”
  3. Damjan Pelc, PhD: “The importance of side projects: science and luck”
  4. MSc. Deni Nurkić: Nuqleus
  5. Panel discussion“Synergy between Academia and Industry” (Dajana Barišić, PhD; Anđelo Beletić, PhD; Leonardo Pierobon, PhD; Martina Manenica, MSc)

Workshops

Workshops are carefully selected for PhD students. This year we will give you an opportunity to join two workshops – one curated for more experienced PhD Students (or ones who want to prepare in advance) and one more applicable for Early Stage Career PhD students.

  1. Andrija Štajduhar, PhD: “From Statistics to Machine Learning in Biomedical Research”
  2. Jelena Godrijan, PhD: “How to successfully submit a project?”

Please note that the standard oral presentations last for 8 minutes followed by 2 minutes reserved for questions. The poster sessions will be organized in a few time slots. Further, please recall that the goal of this symposium is to present your work to the general scientific audience

Awards @ Symposium

  1. The Best Talk
  2. The Best Poster
  3. The Most Attentive Listener

Every year we give three types of Awards. The Best Talk and The Best Poster awards are given to people who managed to get the most interest from the participants, followed the guidelines and presented their research work in an appealing way. Since we have passive participants, we decided to include The Most Attentive Listener award, given to people who followed the Invited Speakers’ talks. To win this award make sure to follow us on Social Media.

Collecting donations on behalf of TBA

This year we continue with the humanitarian character of the Symposium. Stay tuned to find out with whom are we collaborating this year!

We are proud that last year we collaborated with Mali Zmaj to improve the quality of life of children living in institutions and families with lower financial status. For details on how you can help during the symposium, see here.
