As we approach the end of the year, we take a moment to reflect on the successes we have achieved so far. In doing so, it is valuable to revisit the remarkable history woven into this symposium.
The inaugural symposium took place in 2016, marking the celebration of two significant milestones: 140 years of organized scientific and educational endeavors in science and mathematics at the University of Zagreb, and 70 years of the Faculty of Science. The main objective of this gathering is to provide PhD students with the opportunity to present their scientific findings to colleagues, mentors, and doctoral study educators. It also serves as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas, with the added goal of promoting science and nurturing young scientists in the STEM field.
So far, the PhD Student Symposium attracted doctoral students from across Croatia and beyond, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and the Czech Republic. Each year, the symposium brought together over 190 active and passive participants. Attendees had the chance to engage in various workshops and compete for prizes awarded to the best oral and poster presentations..
In an era dominated by virtual meetings, it is crucial to cultivate an environment where young scientists can meet and develop their networking skills, which are pivotal in building a successful scientific career. Moreover, every PhD student can attest to investing substantial time in conducting research to address scientific questions. Equally important is dedicating time to presenting and communicating these results, and this symposium provides an opportunity to do so in a supportive and friendly setting.
Reflecting on the most recent 7th PhD Student Symposium, we fondly recall moments of knowledge-sharing, networking, discovering opportunities for our scientific careers, and, most importantly, having a great deal of fun throughout the event!.
With that, we extend a warm invitation to all PhD students to be part of the upcoming 8th PhDSS scheduled for April 26th and 27th, 2024.
