"Science in the making: lessons from the CARDIKARST project"

Early-stage researchers are often introduced to science through structured methodologies, yet real research is far less predictable, shaped by practical challenges such as equipment failures, data gaps, administrative demands, and the need to bridge disciplinary differences. The CARDIKARST project on cave microclimate and CO₂ dynamics illustrates this process, from initial questions and team formation through project design, fieldwork in demanding cave environments, and the adaptation of methods as unexpected conditions and data emerge. Bringing together experts from multiple disciplines and countries, the project shows that openness to different perspectives is essential, and that uncertainty, incomplete information, and real-world constraints are not obstacles but fundamental conditions under which scientific research develops.

Short Bio

Nenad Buzjak is a Full Professor at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. His research is situated within physical geography, with particular expertise in geoecology, geomorphology, speleology, microclimatology, and nature conservation. His scientific and professional achievements have been recognised with awards from the Croatian Geographical Society for both scientific excellence and the promotion of geography. In 2021, he was elected Research Associate of the Emil Racoviță Institute of Speleology of the Romanian Academy. He currently serves as President of the Croatian Geographical Society and as editor of the web portal Geografija.hr. He has also held key roles in Croatian speleological and geomorphological organisations and remains actively involved in speleological research, science communication, and the promotion of geographical and environmental knowledge.
